Hudcovce is a village located between the southeast spurs of the
Ondavská Vrchovina upland, in the lower part of the Ondavka River
valley, at the altitude of about 140 m. Although the village is provably
older, the first preserved written evidence comes only from 1467. It
was owned by various yeoman families just like other nearby settlements,
the Drugeth family owned it for the longest time. It is certain that
there was a church in Hudcovce before the 17th century. However, the
written evidence is no older than the 17th century. The construction of
the present church was completed in 1940. It was built in the Art Noveau
style. At the turn of the 16th and 17th century Hudcovce was a
mid-sized village inhabited by Slovak subjects. At that time it was the
largest village around. Over 420 inhabitants live here today.
Traditional agricultural lifestyle has been replaced by industry and
trade. An elementary-level basic school and a kindergarten have been
established in Hudcovce. The old school building has been reconstructed
to become a funeral home. Although there are a considerable number of
musicians in the village, the violin tradition, which is also in the
village's coat of arms, has not survived.
